Looking forward to a new Camino season

Hey folks! I am checking in for my obligatory monthly post. I swear I need to post more, and in time I will. I hope my blogs from the Camino Francés last September has been of some use. If you know someone who wants to walk along the Meseta, please pass on the link – it might be helpful. With that said, I am moving swiftly on to talk about my next Camino which I am due to walk in September. I can hear some of you shouting from the rooftops – “but why are you not walking in May, like you usually do?” Good spot, yes May is my preferred walking time but I don’t have walking time before September.

Camino Inglés

In September, I will be returning to Ferrol to walk the Camino Inglés. It is a relatively short walk compared to what I am used to so I am extending that by walking out to Muxia. The length will be approx 200kms in total. I walked from Ferrol before with my brother back in 2019 although we walked it in our own way – walking from Ferrol to Betanzos before doubling back to A Coruna and walking on to Santiago. It is an enjoyable walk although the Ferrol leg is preferrable, in my honest opinion. I wouldn’t consider it challenging, it has a few climbs, but most Caminos have the same. I fly into Santiago late on September 6th and travel to Ferrol the next day. I have booked into a hotel close to the brand new Intermodal bus station in Santiago. I should be in Ferrol before noon and off I walk.

The Camino Inglés, or the English Way is approx 116 kilometers (72 miles). It takes between 4 and 6 days on average to complete, depending on your walking pace and how many stops you make. If you are looking for a shorter and less challenging Camino route, the Camino Inglés from Ferrol is a great option. It is also a good choice for those who want to experience the beauty of Galicia and the culture of northern Spain.

First Pilgrims of 2024

It’s already March, which means Easter is upon us. Today, 377 pilgrims arrived in Santiago and I expect that number to increase soon. Back home in Dublin, I am back volunteering in the Camino Information office and our first pilgrims have arrived. It is great to see the excitement first hand when we meet pilgrims before they set off to Spain, Portugal or further afield. It certainly reminds me of my trepidation before my first Camino. The questions I had – Am I bringing too much? Do I have the right kit? Can I do this? All these questions pale to insignificance when you make your first step. When I read the Camino forums, the planning is alive and well with Summer and Autumn set to be very busy along the more popular routes.

Harbour 2 Harbour 2024

It was St. Patrick’s Day yesterday and I celebrated it in my own little way. Each year, Aware Ireland hosts the Harbour 2 Harbour walk from Dun Laoghaire to Howth, raising funds for mental health and support. I was with my friend Oihana for the day and the weather was just right – there was not a drop of rain. We finished the walk before 3pm after nearly 5 hours. I have been super lazy over the last month or so, so this was great to complete. I am looking forward to do another long walk over the coming weeks.
